Ethnography Museum

The Ethnography Museum of Ankara, founded in 1930, is recognized as Turkey's first museum. Its creation was aimed at exhibiting the rich cultural heritage of Anatolia and its ties to ancient civilizations. The museum’s architecture blends elements from various periods of Ottoman and Republican history, making it a true treasure.

The museum's collection is a rich compilation of items showcasing the ethnic diversity of the Anatolian people. Among the exhibits are traditional cultural costumes, ornaments, and tools unique to Turkey, as well as exquisite examples of Ottoman calligraphy. The Ethnography Museum in Ankara also features a library containing books on Anatolian ethnology and folklore, alongside a display of rugs and kilims from famous carpet weaving centers like Uşak, Bergama, Kula, Milas, Ladik, Karaman, Niğde, and Kırşehir.

In front of the museum stands a bronze statue of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on horseback, sculpted by Italian artist Pietro Canonica in 1927. This statue symbolizes the museum's deep connection to the history and culture of Turkey. Interestingly, during the construction of Anıtkabir, Atatürk's final resting place, from 1938 to 1953, his sarcophagus was temporarily placed inside this museum.
