The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations is located in the Atpazarı district, on the southern side of Ankara Castle in Ankara, Turkey. The museum occupies two buildings: the former Ottoman warehouse and Kurşunlu Han. It was originally envisioned by Atatürk as the foundation for a Hittite museum, and Culture Minister Hamit Zübeyir Koşay purchased the property for the museum's use. After extensive renovations between 1938 and 1968, the Ankara Archaeological Museum was officially opened to the public. Kurşunlu Han currently serves as a center for office spaces, including workrooms, a library, a conference hall, a laboratory, and a workshop. Meanwhile, the old bazaar's Ottoman building is where the museum's exhibitions are displayed. The museum features a range of Anatolian archaeology exhibits, presenting artifacts from the Paleolithic period and prehistoric times. The exhibition is arranged chronologically and covers the Neolithic, Early Bronze Age, Assyrian trading colonies, Hittite, Phrygian Empire, and Urartian civilization. Additionally, the museum also showcases Greek artifacts, Hellenistic-era pieces, and objects from the Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods. The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations boasts an extensive collection of exhibits that trace the development of human history from ancient times to the modern era. Among the museum’s treasures are exquisite works made from gold, silver, glass, marble, and bronze, dating back to the second half of the first millennium BC. The museum is also home to coins, including some of the earliest examples of minted currency. Due to its remarkable collection and its deep historical significance, the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations was honored with the prestigious title of "European Museum of the Year" in Switzerland on April 19, 1997. The museum's historical buildings stand as a testament to the region’s rich cultural legacy and provide visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the history of Anatolia and beyond.
