Amasya Castle

Amasya Castle

Amasya Castle, also referred to as Harşena Castle, is an ancient fortress situated in the northern part of Turkey. Over the centuries, the castle has witnessed numerous invasions, shifts in control, and various restoration efforts, with its origins tracing back to the Persian, Roman, Pontic, and Byzantine periods. After the Ottoman conquest of Amasya, major renovations were carried out, and the castle continued to be used until the 18th century, when it gradually lost its strategic and military importance.

The castle complex features a variety of historical structures, such as cisterns, water reservoirs, and the remnants of a Turkish bath (referred to as "Hamam") that showcase the architectural influence of the Ottoman Empire. It also includes the impressive rock-carved tombs of the Pontus kings, along with armories, storage buildings, mosques, and dungeons. One of the highlights for visitors is the chance to ascend the 150-step Cilanbolu staircase, which has an impressive diameter of 8 meters.

On the southern slope of the castle, visitors can discover the remnants of the "Kızlar Sarayı" (Maidens' Palace), which was used during the Ottoman period. Situated about 20-25 meters high, there are 18 limestone tombs of various sizes carved into the flat cliff face, believed to belong to the Pontus kings. The castle itself includes four entrance gates, each containing dungeons, cisterns, and wells. Altogether, Amasya Castle provides a captivating historical experience, revealing the deep and diverse heritage of the region.
