Situated within the boundaries of the Karataş district, the Akyatan Wildlife Development Area and RAMSAR Area was designated as a "Wildlife Protection and Production Area" by the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks in 1987. In 2005, the area was officially renamed to "Wildlife Development Area" following a decision made by the Council of Ministers.

Akyatan Lagoon is the largest lagoon in Adana, providing an essential habitat for a wide variety of water birds. The area is protected under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, an international treaty aimed at preserving these ecosystems from development and pollution.

The lagoon is home to numerous bird species, including the Francolin, Purple Gallinule, Thick-Knee, Marbled Teal, Snowy Plover, Vanellus Spinosus, and Little Tern. A visit to the Akyatan Wildlife Development Area is a must for those wanting to experience the natural beauty of Adana and witness the wide range of birdlife that inhabit the area.
